SSL

SSL was the original protocol for encrypting web traffic, developed by Netscape in the 1990s. All versions are now deprecated due to serious vulnerabilities such as POODLE, and it has been replaced by TLS. The name lives on colloquially, as in 'SSL certificates', even though those certificates are actually used with TLS.
