WPA2 has been the dominant Wi-Fi security standard since 2004, using AES-based CCMP encryption to protect wireless traffic. It replaced the broken WEP and interim WPA standards. The 2017 KRACK attack exposed weaknesses in its handshake, accelerating the move to WPA3.
