ACME automates proving control of a domain and issuing TLS certificates, removing manual steps from certificate management. It is the protocol behind Let's Encrypt and helped push the web to near-universal HTTPS by making certificates free and automatic. Clients renew certificates on a schedule, which reduces outages from expired certificates.
