Basic Input/Output System
The BIOS is the traditional firmware that initializes a computer's hardware and hands control to the operating system at boot. It has largely been replaced by UEFI, but the term is still used loosely for firmware settings. Because it runs before any OS defenses load, protecting and updating firmware is a foundational security task.
