CAN

Controller Area Network

networkhard

CAN is the bus protocol that lets electronic control units in vehicles and industrial machines talk to each other. It was designed for reliability, not security: there is no authentication, so any node on the bus can send messages that other components will trust, including commands affecting brakes or steering. Famous car-hacking research demonstrated remote injection of CAN messages, driving the push for gateway filtering and intrusion detection in modern vehicles.
