Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act
A 2009 US law that promoted electronic health record adoption and significantly strengthened HIPAA. It introduced the breach notification requirement for health data, raised penalty tiers, and extended HIPAA obligations directly to business associates. It is the reason healthcare breaches must be reported to HHS and often to the media.
