FIPS

Federal Information Processing Standards

cryptomedium

FIPS are the standards NIST issues for US federal computer systems, and in security the term usually points to specific ones like FIPS 140-3 for crypto modules and FIPS 197 for AES. Vendors selling to government must have their cryptography validated against them. "FIPS mode" in products restricts them to these approved algorithms.
