CVE is the global system for assigning a unique identifier, like CVE-2021-44228, to each publicly known vulnerability. Everyone from vendors to scanners to news articles uses CVE IDs so there is no confusion about which flaw is being discussed. It matters because a shared naming scheme is the foundation of all vulnerability management.
